49201 There is nothing found to date to support Samuel being the son of Michael. I place him here as pure speculation and guesswork on my part GLD Dec 2012

Possible he is the Samuel Trollinger living in Spartansburg SC 1820 & 1830 census.

Samuel and his brother, Thomas are both listed on the same page of the North Carolina, U.S., Marriage Index for Rockingham County.

North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868

Gordon,
I browsed ancestry.com census images in 1850 Spartanburg Co., SC about +/- 12 pages on either side of the indexed individuals and found Samuel Trollinger, age 86, born NC, "pauper" living with several of his daughters in the 40s & 50s along with their names. The ancestry.com index sheet: page number & image numbers were INCORRECT as were several indexed names. I have a trial membership for 30 days & will get an annual subscription thereafter as you suggested.

After I sort through everything I will map it out & fill you in.

Thanks again for your help and the advice from Kay, too.

I have pretty much scoured the local Spartanburg Co., SC records on site in person myself:
- no wills
- no probate
- no birth/death certificates
- a few newspaper marriage notices & obituaries
- about a dozen deeds
- several deed witnesses
- a neighboring church minutes (with visiting Trollinger elder)
- a cemetery survey of the church of the cited elder (see prior item) without any Trollinger
- 29 page church history publication with no mention of Trollinger
- Spartanburg Co., SC censuses from 1790 to 1880 & noted all Trollingers
CSA regimental histories & muster records for the three men who were in the Civil War.

I, too, have a copy of the Bishop family Bible you mention. Henry Jefferson Bishop was married to Eliza L. Self (she was previously married to a Mr. Williams). "Mrs." Julia Ann Trollinger was a neighbor/domestic who provided care services to Eliza in her old age. After Eliza died, her son, B.F. Williams (by Eliza's first marriage) gave Julia Ann Trollinger land for services rendered to Eliza before she died. Very shortly thereafter, Julia Ann Trollinger married Eliza's widowed husband H.J. Bishop. Of the three Trollinger children listed, one was my great-grandfather, John Marcus Trollinger. His grandmother was Hulda Trollinger, not Julia Ann Trollinger. His mother's name is believed to be Destiny (???), reputedly an Indian from the nearby Catawba Reservation, but no doubt you've heard that Indian princess story before. I guess "Mrs Julia Ann was the children's mother, maybe their aunt, but must have been someone close to the children. Otherwise why the entry in Mrs. Julia Ann Trollinger husband's Family Bible? Maybe another wife of Albert Bomer Trollinger, but do not know for sure. What I haven't reviewed or found yet are the extant (and available) microfilmed church minutes from the church of the elder, deeds abstracted for the property they owned for which there is/are no deeds of later conveyance, any death certificates that may be available for descendants who died in GA, any Michael or Samuel Trollinger wills filed in NC, or descendant wills filed in GA.

Dear Gordon,

We spoke several years ago when I lived in Indianapolis & you sent much information to me about Drollinger/Trollinger in Almance Co., NC & thence back to Germany. I am still stumped as to who his parents were & who his descendants were. Despite the abundance of Drollinger/Trollinger information available for families in NC, TN, TX, PA, OH, NJ, VA, etc., very little exists for SC. In Spartanburg Co., there were several descendants (Albert Bomer Trollinger, William Trollinger, & Hosea Trollinger) who were in CSA 1st SC Inf. My line descends from A. B. Trollinger, born Apr 1846, but I cannot determine with confidence his relationship to the much older Samuel, born ABT 1775. A. B. Trollinger was my great-great grandfather ... my mother's father's father's father. His mother was Hulda Trollinger who lived as w/o James Morrison in Spartanburg Co., SC 1860 census, but I found a newspaper reference of the marriage of "Miss" Hulda Trollinger & James Morrison in Spartanburg, SC on 14 Sep 1865 in the 15 Feb 1866 Carolina Spartan newspaper. It would appear they Hulda & James lived together for some time without the benefit of matrimony. However, whether Bomer was the son of James Morrison or some other man is unclear. Also, I presume "Miss" Hulda Trollinger was in some way descended from Samuel Trollinger, but cannot determine from Spartanburg Co., SC 1820/1830 records. Can you help? If you will reply with your telephone number, I will call to discuss.

Sincerely,
Richard Hessler

49202 There is one year discrepancy in Mary's birth year. Her obituary date matches her 1900 Census record. As a result, 1856 is probably the correct year and her headstone is probably incorrect. Drulinger, Mary (I39304)

49203 There is some discrepancy with her middle intial being either E or B.

Her middle name may be Ellen after her mother.

She should not be confused with Cora Belle Brewer who is a different person.

GILBERT E. KOEDEL.

The history of a community is but a record of the doings of its people, and the story of the plain, common people who compose the moral bone and sinew of the community should ever attract the attention and prove of interest to all true lovers of their kind. In the lye story of Gilbert E. Koedel there are no striking chapters or startling incidents, but it is merely the record of a life true to its highest ideals and one which has played its part in the development and prosperity of the locality.
Gilbert E. Koedel was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on the 10th of December, 1873, and is a son of John L. and Louisa (Drollinger) Koedel. The father was born in Pittsburgh in 1847, and he spent practically his entire life there, dying in 1876, at the early age of twenty-nine years. He was a glass worker by occupation, a republican in his political faith and a member of the Lutheran church. His wife was born at Hannastown, Butler county, Pennsylvania, and is now making her home with her son, Gilbert E. John L. Koedel was the son cf Henry I Coedel, a native of Germany, who was born in 1821 and died on his farm in Hannastown, Pennsylvania, in 1916, at the age of ninety-five years. He was a stanch republican in his political belief and a great admirer of Theodore Roosevelt. He was a faithful member of the Lutheran church. Gilbert E. Koedel was educated in the public schools of Jefferson township, Butler County, after which he took a course in the Iron City Business College, at Pittsburgh, where he was graduated. He then accepted a clerkship in an iron and steel brokerage house, where he remained until November, 1892, when he went to work for the Kremble Iron Company, remaining there until April, 1899. During the ensuing year he was with the Colonial Iron Company and from July 1, 1900, to January 1, 1901, he was with the Pressed Steel Car Company at Pittsburgh. From that time until June 8, 1902, he was in the employ of the Saxton Furnace Company, at Saxton, Pennsylvania, and on the latter date he entered the employ of the American Steel & Wire Company, at its Neville Island works, near Pittsburgh. On November 1, 1908, Mr. Koedel was transferred to the plant at Donora, where he has remained to the present time, filling the office of chief clerk. He is also chief clerk of the Donora Southern Railroad Company, and is a director of the First National Bank of Donora. His long retention in his important position with the American Steel & Wire Company evidences his thorough qualification for the position he holds, and he is held in high esteem by his business associates. Since locating here he has taken a commendable interest in public affairs and has been a prominent factor in the town's development and welfare.
Politically Mr. Koedel gives his support to the republican party and has served as a member of the Donora borough council for eight years, being president of that body for three years of that time. At the September, 1925, primaries he was nominated for the office of burgess, being supported not only by his own party but also by democratic and prohibition voters as well. He has also served as a notary public. During the World war he was secretary of the draft board; reorganized the Red Cross in Donora; and was an ardent supporter.of the Liberty Loan and Red Cross drives in this community. He is an adherent of the Presbyterian church. Fraternally Mr. Koedel is a member of McKinley Lodge, -No. 318, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, at Pittsburgh; is a thirty-second degree member of the Pittsburgh Consistory of the Scottish Rite; belongs to Syria Temple, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, at Pittsburgh; and Donora Lodge, No. 1265, Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, of which he is a past exalted ruler, and is also district deputy for southwestern Pennsylvania and a trustee in that body. He is a member and past president of the Americo Club.
On June 15, 1904, at Pittsburgh, Mr. Koedel was married to Miss Edith Von Dera, a native of that city and a daughter of Louis and Mary (Wohler) Von Dera. Her father was born in Germany, was long engaged in the retail shoe business in Pittsburgh, but was retired at the time of his death, which occurred in that city. He was a republican and a member of the Lutheran church. His wife also was born in Germany and passed away in Pittsburgh. Mrs. Koedel was educated in the public and high schools of that city; is a member of the Presbyterian church; is president of the Unity Club; and belongs to the Donora Woman's Club and the Order of the Eastern Star. To! Mr. and Mrs. Koedel have been born two children, namely: John G., born November 23, 1905, was graduated from the Donora high school, attended the University of Pittsburgh and is now a law student in Washington and Lee University, at Lexington, Virginia; Samuel E. born May 10, 1907, was graduated from the Donora High Schooland is now a student in the University of Pittsburgh.
Mr. Koedel's prominence in his community is the legitimate result of genuine merit and ability, and in every relation of life, whether in the sphere of private citizenship or as a trusted official, his many excellencies of character have won for him an enviable reputation as an enterprising, progressive and representative citizen.

Koedel, Gilbert E. ? of Pennsylvania. Republican. Candidate for House of Representatives 24th District, 1944.

Note: Because her first name is spelled "Margret" on her elaboratelycarved stone grave marker (no doubt an expensive marker for its time),I would assume that was the way her name was meant to be spelled andthe common spelling of "Margaret" is in error as it refers to herwhich is the way I have it spelled in this record until suchcompelling evidence to the contrary is discovered.

Most women I've ever met never thought enoughof their step-mothers to actually name their daughters after them!

Dye, Mary Ann (I18041)

49239 This is and was a curious story and had to have been the source ofmuch bemusement among the various family members in their time.Azariah Olden Parnell was married twice. Azariah first married NancyF. Blackstone (I am descended from this marriage) and together theyhad a daughter named Margret Lucinda Parnell. Nancy, unfortunately, died young and Azariah later married Mary Ann Dye who was the daughterof Gilbert and Priscilla Dye. Gilbert and Priscilla Dye had severalother children including Mary Ann's brother, Henry Dye. Henry Dyemarried Margret Lucinda Parnell and together they had severalchildren, one of which was a daughter they also named Mary Ann Dye andanother daughter, Eda Dye who is my great grandmother. As a result ofher marriage to Henry, Margret would have been the step-daughter ofMary Ann Dye (her father's second wife), but in addition, they wouldhave also been sisters-in-law due to the fact that Mary Ann and Henrywere brother and sister! Another curiosity is that Margret must haveeither thought enough of her or was easy going enough that she (inconjunction with her husband, Henry) would name her own daughter MaryAnn knowing that in spite of the fact that the elder Mary Ann was herhusband's sister, but at the same time was also her father's secondwife - her step-mother! 49244 This is probably the same Henry found in the 1850 North Woodbury, Blair County, PA census at age 74 in August 1850. He is residing with Nancy Drollinger 56 who is possibly his wife. At the difference in ages she is possible a second wife. Although she could also be the wife of a deceased son also. More evidence is needed.

49245 This is probably the same Henry listed in land deed as a son of John of Guilford. If so it makes more sense than as a son of Eberhard. (A lot of researchers place him as a son of Johan Eberhard, hence the E on family group sheets) No documents found to prove the E in his name. Will of Henry probated 31 August 1848, dated 3 February 1846, witnessed by Thomas Lyons, Strother Shell. To daughters Susan Bailey, Sally Bailey, Hannah Woodward, Katharine Pender, Margaret Bonebrake, Lavina Bonebrake, Rosanna Baker, sons Daniel and John Henry; son John Henry executor. A copy of this will is in Marie Rizek Bonebrake's book, "Daniel Beinbrech His Ancestors and Descendants" Copy of the Drollinger pages in the possession of GLD.

In the matter of the probate case of William Drollinger, Elias Drollinger testied his uncle, Henry Drollinger, "a brother and heir of William," had never been notified of the estate proceedings. When William died, he said, Henry resided in Guilford County, "where he continued to live until some time after Morkert pretended to sell said land," then moved to Fountain County Indiana, his current residence. 49246 This is speculation that Peter is the son of Johan Eberhard. There is no direct evidence that names him as a son. As he is paying tax in Marborough Township Philadelphia County in 1769 that would tend to place his birth at 1748 or earlier. He is also on the Franconia tax list 1774. Sources PA Archives 3rd series, volume XIV pages 27 and 328. Volume XVI pages 146 and 552 also list him with 3 acres and 1 cow. Then according to the Historical Society of Montgomery County (21 Sep 1993 letter signed by Judith Meier) Peter appears on the tax lists in 1788 with 5 acres, a dwelling, a horse and a cow. In 1801 his name was crossed out and and widow was written over it. In 1802 his mother was joined on the tax lists by George a single man with no property. George and the widow Trollinger remained on the Franconia tax lists until 1809 when both names were crossed off. Deed book 35 page 538 Montgomery County PA records the sale of a 9 acre 35 perch property in Franconia from Andrew Trollinger of Germantown, Philadelphia County, innkeeper and Susanna his wife, to George Springer, Taylor of Franconia. The deed explains that 4 acres had belonged to Peter Trollinger died intestate. The 4 acres were given to Andrew his oldest son. The other 5 acres came from Andrew Trumbore who willed it to his daughter Sophia, the wife of Peter Trollinger, who was to have it for her natural life. George Trollinger and Henry Hartzel witnessed the signing.

1801 -- Name of Peter Trollinger, of Franconia, on Montgomery Co. tax list crossed out, and "Widow Trollinger" written over it [NOTE: Apparently, Peter of Franconia may in fact have died earlier and his estate was not probated until his wife died if he gave her rights to live on the property for her lifetime, as was the custom in that time.]
1802 through 1809 -- "Widow" Trollinger and George Trollinger, single, of Franconia, on Montgomery Co. tax list
