Buchanan, old- time citizen of Whitesboro, died at his home on East Main street after an illness of several months. Mr. Buchanan was born at Wartrace, Tenn., March 19, 1857, his father was an extensive planter and member of one of the prominent families of that state. After the death of his father , Mr. Buchanan, with his mother and her other children, came to Texas, entering through the Port of Galveston in 1870. After sojourning a number of years in Mexia and Waco, they took up their permanent residence in Whitesboro, arriving here in 1880. Mr. Buchanan became connected with the firm of Ligon & Edwards, general merchants, and continued in that capacity until 1886. When the City Bank of Sherman opened a branch in Whitesboro he became its manager. His connection with that institution continued until 1907, when he formed a connection with the First National Bank of Whitesboro, serving successively in the position of vice president, president and chairman of the board of directors. The latter position he held at the time of his death.
Mr. Buchanan was a successful business man, enjoyed a large acquaintance and was one of the best-known business men in this section. As a young man he had several years experience as a ranchman in Southwest Texas. He was personally acquainted with many early cattlemen of the State. He rode the trail from Texas to Dodd City, Kans., a number of times during the period when Texas cattle were marketed in large numbers in that state.
In 1883 he was married to Lily Trolinger, daugher of the late Dr. Trolinger of this city, to which union were born two daughters and a son. His wife died in 1892 and in 1894 he was married to Miss Mamie Ratzel of Sherman, who with the children mentioned above, survive him.
Mr. Buchanan received his education at Trinity University when it was located at Tehuacana, Limestone County. He always cherished the warm affection for his schoolmates in this institution, many of whom were later numbered among the most prominent men in the State. Conspicuous in the group were the late Gov. Thomas M. Campbell of Palastine and Judge William F. Ramsey, later head of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.
