- THE JOURNAL OF THE SAN JUANS:
Forrest Edward Gowen, age 62, died on Wednesday, March 16 in his home.
He served in the U. S. Air Force during WW II for three years, then in the reserves for 34 years, before retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
He worked as an aeronautical engineer and research scientist for N A S A at Moffett Field
in California for 25 years, retiring in 1974 to move to San Juan Island. Here, he served on the county Energy Committee.
In 1961, he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and was active in missionary and genealogical work on the islands. He also served for two years as a worker in the Seattle temple. He and his wife were preparing to go to Spain to serve as missionaries for the church.
Interment on San Juan Island.
Forrest suffered a heart attack on 3 January 1983; followed by another a week later. He then suffered a stroke and died on 16 March.
Forrest and Velda married on 7 February 1947
at Provo, Utah, Utah.
They were the parents of four children.
On 14 December 1942 Forrest signed the draft at San Diego, California for service in WW II.
