    • NOTE: one of LT Drullinger's fellow soldiers in the 9th Indiana Volunteer Infantry was none other than Ambrose Bierce.

      Ambrose Bierce was an American newspaperman, satirist, and short story writer. He disappeared in Mexico in 1914 and his final fate is unknown.
      Synopsis
      Ambrose Bierce was born on June 24, 1842 in Meigs county, Ohio. He worked as a printer's apprentice and enlisted to fight in the Civil War. After the war he worked as an editor, journalist, and short story writer; capturing his war experiences in vivid detail. In 1913 he went to Mexico, then in the midst of a revolution led by Pancho Villa. He disappeared sometime in 1914.

      THE SOUTH BEND TRIBUNE, THURSDAY, 29 FEBRUARY 1912
      Following an illness of five years with cancer, Robert Drullinger, aged 71, and for 35 years a resident of South Bend, died shortly before noon today at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Margaret Whaley, at 509 South Scott Street. Mr. Drullinger resided at 845 Smith Street, River Park. He was born in Valparaiso Indiana on 25 May 1840. He served throughout the civil war and was married on 1 Jan 1866. Eight children were born, two of which, Mrs Whaley and G.D. Drullinger of Chicago survive. Mr. Drullinger also leaves one sister, Mrs. Mary Hitchcock, of South Bend. Mr. Drullinger was a member of Auten GAR post and funeral services, under the auspices of that body will be held on Sunday at 2 o'clock from Grace Methodist Episcopal church, Rev. F.K. Dougherty officating. Burial will be in the city cemetery.

His several places of residence since leaving the service have been: in Missouri 1866 to 1872, in Nebraska 1872 to 1878, at Kouts Indiana 1878 to 1879, at South Bend since. Living children as of 2 May 1898; Ida (Van Arsdel) 30 January 1873, George Daniel 8 November 1875, Margaret May 2 Feb 1886. Ranks of private, corporal, 1st sergeant and 1st LT.
