Roy C. Dawson, 79, a microbiologist and soil scientist who retired from the Department of Agriculture and later worked for the U.N. Food and Agricultural Organization, died Nov. 28 at his home in Hyattsville after a heart attack.
Dr. Dawson was born in Culpeper, Va. He graduated from the University of Maryland and also earned a master's degree in microbiology there. He received a doctorate in soil science at the University of Nebraska.
A resident of the Washington area since 1920, Dr. Dawson began his career as a food inspector for the D.C. Health Department. In the early 1930s, he went to work at the Soil Conservation Service at Agriculture. For most of his career there, he was a soil science consultant on international programs in the Agricultural Research Service.
In the early 1960s, Dr. Dawson retired from the government and went to work for the FAO. He was an agricultural adviser and a technical recruiter until he retired a second time in 1969.
In retirement, he played the saxophone with local dance bands.

'Roy C. Dawsons On Wedding Trip Through South' (headline)
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Carlton Dawson are on their Southern wedding trip and will visit New Orleans. The marriage of the former Miss Virginia Trullinger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Trullinger, took place Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock in the Church of Our Saviour, with the Rev. Alvin Lamar Wills officiating.
The bride was given in marriage by her father. She wore a suit of pale blue and a corsage of orchids. Her flowered hat matched the ensemble. Miss Ernestine M. Loeffler was the bride's only attendant. William A. Noite was best man.
A reception and buffet supper was given at the home of the bride's parents. White flowers were used with palms to decorate the house.
The bride was graduated from Ohio State University. Mr. Dawson, who is the son of Mrs. Virginia Dawson, was graduated from the University of Maryland. Both received M.S. degrees at the University of Maryland.
