John T. McCamey, son of Joseph H. and Nancy McCamey, and George William Deaver, .son of William Shipley Deaver, were confederate soldiers in the civil war. They were killed by Union soldiers or bush-whackers while coming home on furlough. Apparently they had stopped at a spring to rest their sore feet. Their bodies were placed on a bush pile and burned, then thrown off a cliff near Elm Springs, Arkansas. The men of the community being away at war, the ladies of the community wrapped the bodies in sheets, moved them by ox-cart to Elm Springs and buried them in the same grave in the Elm Springs cemetery. The tombstone reads "died in defence of his country". Bushwhackers were local independent companies of guerrillas for both sides.
