    • History of Venango County Pennsylvania page 566

Elisha Archer was born in the eastern part of Pennsylvania. He emigrated to Venango County in 1801 and located on a tract of 400 acres in what is now Cherrytree township, and commenced improving the same. In about a year after his arrival he returned to his former home and married Miss Hannah Staples, then moved out to his cabin on said tract of land, carrying all they had on one horse. His wife rode the horse and he took it on foot over the mountains. After a weary journey of several days, they reached their new home in Venango. The privations and hardships they were obliged to endure are better imagined than described. The only roads were Indian paths through continuous woods. They went to Pittsburgh for their flour for some time. The Holland company erected a mill on Pinecreek, two miles east of Titusville, then they would carry their corn to mill on horseback. Settlers were scarse in that neighborhood then. They reared a family of children. He died in 1813.

Robert Archer was born in Venango county, 1806. He married Miss Elizabeth Crist. They had a family of nine children.

Actually my only connection to the Archers is through Elisha's wife Hannah Staples. She married 2nd William McGinnis of Crawford County outside Titusville. Cherrytree township being just south in Venango County. I found the tax records for Crawford in the library in Meadville (county seat). William was paying taxes on 200 acres even tho there was no record of land ownership. The major clue came from the retiring recorder of deeds for Venango county in Franklin. She was cleaning out her office and found an early letter I had written. In the basement was the record of a case where an Isaac Archer had sued Wm and Hannah in 1819 for 200 acres of land. GLD
