  	Alfred Lester 1919-1996 Pioneer son Alfred (Al) C. Lester died peacefully in his sleep after a long battle with cancer on April 4, 1996, at the Routt Memorial Hospital Extended Care Center. Al was born on Jan. 10, 1919, in Routt County and was raised by his pioneer parents, Harry and Hallie Lester, on the farm on the upper Elk River. He spent his formative years in the Long Gulch area with his brother, Luther, and his two sisters, Hallie and Thelma. Al enjoyed cross country skiing, fishing, and working on his parents' land. He served in the Unites States Army with the B53rd Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion as a heavy machine gunner in both the African and European theaters during World War II. He received the Good Conduct and Victory medals. He was also a lifetime member of the 533rd AAA Separate Battalion Association. His greatest pride and joy was his yard, which he worked long and hard on to make it into a showcase. All who knew him enjoyed at least one walk through his garden, flowers and shade trees. Funeral services were held Monday, April 8, at the Shearon Funeral Home with burial in the Steamboat cemetery. (Published in The Steamboat Pilot (Steamboat Springs, CO), April 11, 1996.)
