- Funeral for John A. Richardson, a retired deputy chief of the Portland Police Bureau, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Zeller Chapel of Roses. He died Thursday in a Portland hospital at age 69.
Richardson joined the police force as a patrolman in 1935, and was known as one of the first "college boys" on the force. He was a business administration graduate of the University of Oregon, and he attended Northwest College of Law for two years.
During his years with the Police Bureau, he served as patrolman, inspector, commander of the traffic division and deputy chief of the service branch from 1957 until he retired in 1973.
He was born in Tigard and lived most of his life in Portland.
He was a member of the Portland Elks Lodge, a member and past president of the downtown Lions Club, and life member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, a member of the board of the Police Bureau's Sunshine Division, the Masonic Lodge, the Shrine and the Scotish [sic] Rite.
Surviving are his wife, Bethel, and a brother, Clyde of Portland.
