- Nancy McClenahan Skochdopole passed away peacefully on Friday January 17, 2025.
She was born to Edgar and Elizabeth (Johnson) McClenahan on June 5, 1929, in Des Moines, Iowa. Nan lived a full life, devoted to enjoying and caring for family, friends, and the community.
Following graduation from Davenport (IA) High School (1947) and Iowa State University (1951), with a degree in Child Development, she taught preschool in Omaha, Nebraska.
While attending Iowa State, Nan met Richard Skochdopole and they married on June 27, 1953. The couple moved to Midland, Michigan in 1955 when Dick began work at Dow Chemical.
Dick preceded Nan in death on December 23, 2024. Together Nan and Dick are survived by four children, seven grandchildren, and one great grandchild:
Jill (Andrew Smith) of East Ryegate, VT and their children Rachel (Tanya Ocker) and Daniel; Todd (Angela) of Savoy, IL and their children Megan (Josh Huser) and Nolan (Ella); James (Nancy) of Dallas, TX and their children Katherine (Tyler Minnich) and Ellen (William Wolfe); Mark (Janet) of Manhattan, KS and their son Michael, and great grandson Samuel Minnich.
Nan was preceded in death by her brother, James McClenahan.
A life-long learner and avid reader, Nan was deeply committed to education, not only for herself and her family, but for her community (both locally and worldwide). She was a charter member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and the DR Chapter of P.E.O. International. Nan was also an active member of AAUW, League of Women Voters, King?s Daughters and Sons, and Habitat for Humanity. She served on the Midland Public Schools? Board of Education from 1981-1984, after more than 10 years as an observer for AAUW. In recent years, she was a member of Nonviolent Peaceforce and the Culture of Understanding Committee.
A celebration of life service and reception for Dick and Nan are planned on Saturday, April 5, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church (morning) and Creative 360 (later that day).
